German Dictionary

The Internet is a repository of paid and free resource that has helped the humankind attain a different level of communication and data entry and retrieval. With the advances of online technology, no longer are dictionaries found just in book or paper form but also in virtual formats such as those found in an online German dictionary.

Advantages of an Online Dictionary

One of the best advantages that online dictionaries and references have over their printed counterparts is that they could be automatically updated when new words are available - making them more reliable when it comes to defining a certain word. This is especially invaluable these days when new things are constantly created, prompting a need for these words to have new terms that should then be added to the dictionary. Take as an example the word "computer" as "rechner" which could not be found in an older German dictionary but found in versions from around the late 70s to 80s when the computers were created.

Because the Internet is a free resource, one could easily use a free dictionary which contains updated, reliable, and relevant information without having to buy a printed German dictionary, for instance. Although this should not mean that printed dictionaries are not good, this means that the advantage is in favor of online dictionaries especially when the user does not really have to use the dictionary extensively.

This is best exemplified by a journalist who might want to write about German cuisine for an American audience. Because the terms or names of the food will be in German, a rough translation to English might be done using a German dictionary. However, the journalist will only need the dictionary to write that one article, buying one in print is less ideal than using an online one.

Disadvantages

The main disadvantage of using free online resource is that it would be difficult to determine if the source is reliable or not. One may just have to rely on well-known language dictionary names such as Webster but because not all languages and words are covered, other resources might be required. That means that the translation may not be correct or could be correct for certain instances but not on others.

Should you buy a German dictionary in print? The answer depends on you, really. If the dictionary will be extensively used to learn the language, then, by all means buy it because it is worth buying.
